Beyond speech therapy, I work with literacy, social communication, alternate forms of communication and eating and food challenges.
When working together, we may be supporting verbal communication. We can support your child’s pronunciation and organisation of speech sounds in order for them to be understood by those around them. We may also be supporting an individual’s fluency – which is the ability to speak smoothly.
Language refers to the ability to use and understand words and sentences. We can help if your child is a late-talker or needs support with furthering their language skills
This refers to the way we interact with others and build friendships. We can provide support with navigating social situations and building relationships with others. Social communication is another area where Speech Pathologists can support. We live in a neuro-diverse world – meaning there are many natural variations in the way our brains function - each with individual strengths and challenges. I work with many neurodivergent individuals (e.g. people who are Autistic, have ADHD , dyslexia, or a developmental language disorder) and support them to build friendships and navigate social interactions with confidence in their preferred way, as well as understanding and advocating for their own needs and preferences.
If your child has strong food preferences and aversions, we can support them to extend the range of foods they eat. We will use play to support them in exploring new foods and process sensory information such as texture, smells, and tastes. Be warned, the parents are highly involved, and you may end up modelling a carrot moustache.
Communication takes many different forms, all are equally valid. Not everyone communicates verbally - we can help find the best method of communication for that individual - this might involve hand signs, pictures, speech generating devices. For some people, we communicate using images, symbols, writing, sign, gesture, or a combination. I work with you and your loved ones to help find the communication mode that fits best. We then put it into practice in everyday contexts to ensure everyone has a way to express who they are, develop relationships, and contribute to society.
In your first session, you will have the opportunity to share why you/your loved ones are seeking Speech Pathology and ask me any questions you may have about the process. We will create some goals together, and I will ask you questions to gain an understanding of your life and journey to date.
Sessions take place in whichever environment is most relevant for the individual and their goals. This may be at home – using the resources you already have, in the school yard, classroom, or out in the community (e.g. in their favourite café, or at the beach). We all learn best when we’re having fun, so I will always endeavour to include someone’s interests and strengths into the activities we do. As a parent, you are your child’s best therapist, so I will also be training you and significant others in their life on what you can do at home to ensure they continue progressing in between sessions.
